Overview / Responsibilities

Wood has a permanent employment opportunity for a Senior Fisheries Biologist in Calgary, AB. The successful candidate will join our aquatics team working on a broad range of resource development projects in western and northern Canada.


The successful candidate will work within the fisheries and aquatic resources group under the supervision of the Natural Sciences group lead.  Primary responsibility will be to lead the fisheries and aquatic resources component on a variety of projects, which will involve the following:

  • Manage, develop, execute fisheries and aquatic resources investigations and assessments
  • Manage tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work, and produce high-quality technical deliverables on schedule and within budget
  • Coordinate and oversee aquatic resource field programs and field staff
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to intermediate and junior staff
  • Understand and apply current and emerging environmental regulations, guidelines and best practices
  • Lead document preparation for Federal and Provincial environmental approvals, related to energy resource sectors in western Canada (e.g., pipelines, oil and gas) and other development projects
  • Liaise and work with other technical specialists as part of multi-disciplinary project teams, including hydrologists, GIS specialists, infrastructure engineers, and other environmental disciplines
  • Interact with contractors, sub-consultants and regulatory agencies as required
  • Develop and maintain client and regulatory contacts
  • Lead field work and provide support in local and remote locations related to baseline, environmental effects monitoring and other post development/permit compliance monitoring
  • Have experience using and maintaining field equipment
  • Promote Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work
  • Development of project and site-specific Health and Safety Plans
  • Write and review technical reports
  • Proposal writing

Skills / Qualifications

The position will require the successful candidate to have a solid technical and/or academic background, in combination with significant client, regulatory, and management experience in the consulting industry. Experience within western Canada is preferred. Key requirements include:

  • Degree in Biology, Ecology or related discipline
  • Strong technical writing and management skills
  • Experience with some or all of the following:
    • fish inventory and aquatic habitat assessment techniques
    • fish life history and habitat requirements, particularly Alberta fish species
    • radio-telemetry
    • toxicology and fish health
    • instream flow needs
    • benthic invertebrates
    • zooplankton, phytoplankton, and/or periphyton
  • Experience developing field programs to support baseline data collection and monitoring
  • Strong understanding of provincial (i.e., Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, NWT) and federal regulatory requirements pertaining to the aquatic environment
  • Experience obtaining regulatory approvals from key government organizations (i.e., DFO, NPP, AEP)
  • Experience developing fish habitat compensation for DFO Fisheries Act Authorizations
  • Experience preparing aquatic components of environmental impact assessments for a range of projects
